Data Release Agreement
1. Who This Agreement Is Between
This Data Release Agreement ("Agreement") is between DataHive ("Platform", "we", "us") and you, the individual contributor ("Contributor", "you") who registers and submits data through the DataHive platform.
By checking the consent box and creating an account, you enter into this legally binding agreement.
2. What Data You Are Contributing
When you complete tasks on DataHive, you may submit:
- Voice recordings — audio files of your speech, spoken language, slang, and dialect
- Text submissions — written answers, translations, slang definitions, and descriptions
- Images — photos you take or upload as part of tasks
- Metadata — your language, dialect, region, country, age group, and gender (if provided)
- Transcripts — auto-generated or manually written text derived from your audio
3. Rights You Grant to DataHive
By submitting data to the platform, you grant DataHive a:
- Worldwide license to use your submitted data
- Royalty-free (beyond the points/cash you are paid per submission)
- Perpetual license for data that has already been approved and sold
- Sublicensable — DataHive may sell or license your data to AI companies, researchers, and other third parties
- Non-exclusive — you still own your voice and can record the same things for other platforms
This means once a submission is approved, DataHive can include it in datasets sold to AI companies without additional permission or payment from you beyond what you were already paid.
4. How Your Data Will Be Used
Your submissions will be used to:
- Build African language AI training datasets (speech recognition, NLP, language models)
- Train, test, and improve AI and machine learning systems
- Conduct academic and commercial research on African languages
- Create speech synthesis and voice cloning models (in aggregate, not individual voice profiles)
- Power AI products in healthcare, legal, financial, and educational sectors
5. Compensation
You will be paid in DataHive points for each approved submission. Points convert to real money (400 points = $1 USD) and can be withdrawn via M-Pesa, cryptocurrency, or bank transfer once you reach the minimum withdrawal threshold.
This payment is your complete compensation for the rights granted in this Agreement. DataHive may earn additional revenue from selling your data to third parties — this is disclosed here and you accept it by signing this agreement.
6. Your Rights
Right to Stop
You can stop contributing at any time. This does not affect data already submitted and approved.
Right to Know
You can ask us what data we hold about you and how it has been used.
Right to Delete
You can request deletion of your account and future-use data. Data already sold to third parties cannot be recalled.
Right to a Copy
You can request a copy of all submissions you have made on the platform.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the admin email on the About page.
7. What You Warrant (Promise)
By contributing, you confirm that:
- You are at least 18 years old (or have parental consent if permitted by your local law)
- You own or have the right to submit what you are recording or writing
- Your submissions do not infringe any copyright, trademark, or third-party rights
- You are not recording conversations or audio from other people without their knowledge
- Your submissions do not contain illegal content, hate speech, or content that violates DataHive's Terms of Service
8. Consent Verification
When you check the consent box and create your account, DataHive records:
- Your IP address at the time of consent
- The exact date and time of your consent (UTC)
- The version of this agreement you agreed to (DRA-v1.0)
- Your browser/device information (User-Agent)
This record is stored permanently and constitutes proof of your informed consent for legal purposes.
9. Changes to This Agreement
If we make material changes to this agreement, we will notify you by email or in-app message and ask for your renewed consent before you can submit further data. Your existing approved submissions remain governed by the version you agreed to.
10. Governing Law
This Agreement is governed by applicable data protection and commercial laws. For disputes, we will first attempt resolution through direct communication.
